Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find ¡®which experience¡¯the neglected children have in the process of sand play therapy and what the ¡®essence¡¯ is in its experience. We also aim to examine a change observed for the neglected children in low-income brackets in a qualitative manner. The subjects consist of four girls in the 4th-6th grades who attend after-school classroom in the evening at the community welfare center. All of these children have experienced physical negligence and are currently experiencing emotional negligence. Under the framework of Giorgi¡¯s phenomenological method, all materials are collected and the findings are elicited according to Giorgi¡¯s phenomenological analytical procedure in four steps. As a result, 11 sub-components are found in the experience of sand play therapy for the neglected children in low-income brackets. Through the process of grouping, four components are elicited: 1) ¡®contact¡¯, 2) ¡®acceptance¡¯, 3)¡®expression,¡¯ and 4) ¡®growth¡¯. All these components represent specific personalized characteristics of each child that are experienced and further developed during the process of the sand-play therapy. These characteristics are related with the uniqueness and the individulaity of the neglected children in low-income brackets. During the process of the sand-play therapy, it became evident that these children exposed their internal world and faced it, revealed their unfulfilled desires and angers, and eventually showed mental growth.
